Physics is the subject where a missed grade does not lower your offer. It removes the course.
Around 45,800 students across the UK sat A-level physics in summer 2026, about 850 more than the year before, and around 32% of those entries were graded A or A*. Those are JCQ’s own published results tables. On entries physics is a long way behind biology and chemistry; on the top band it sits alongside chemistry and above biology.
None of that is the reason physics retakes are different. The reason is that physics is named as a required subject on engineering and physical science courses in a way that biology and chemistry mostly are not, and that 40% of the qualification, at minimum, is mathematics.
Physics Is a Maths A-Level Wearing a Lab Coat
Every reformed science A-level has to assess mathematical skills at a minimum weighting, and physics carries by far the highest. Under the regulator’s subject-level conditions for science (opens in a new tab), the floor is set per subject.

Two marks in every five, at minimum, are earned by doing maths correctly. Not by knowing physics, by doing maths. In practice that means rearranging an equation before substituting anything into it, working in standard form, keeping unit prefixes straight, reading a gradient and an intercept off a graph and saying what each represents, handling percentage uncertainty, and using logarithms for radioactive decay and capacitor discharge.
This is the single most useful thing to understand before planning a physics retake. A student who is confident with the physics and shaky with the algebra is not a physics problem. They are a mechanics-of-calculation problem sitting in a physics exam, and the fix looks nothing like re-reading the specification.

Where Physics Resitters Actually Lose Marks
Almost nobody arrives for a physics resit with a hole in the content. They can state Newton’s laws. They know what a standing wave is. They have derived the ideal gas equation. The grade went somewhere much more specific than that, and it is nearly always one of three places.
Multi-step calculations, where the chain breaks
Physics questions chain in a way chemistry questions usually do not. A single question part will ask you to find a momentum, use it to find a kinetic energy, use that to find a braking distance. Three steps, each depending on the last, with only the final answer carrying the accuracy mark.
The losses cluster in predictable spots. A quantity left in millimetres when the equation wanted metres. An intermediate value rounded to two significant figures and then carried forward, so the final answer is wrong in the third digit. A prefix misread: micro for milli is a factor of a thousand and it is the most common single arithmetic error in the subject. And the habit that costs most of all, doing two rearrangements mentally and writing only the result, so that when the arithmetic fails there is no method on the page to award.
Longer explanation questions, where the order matters
The extended explanation questions are marked for a linked chain of reasoning, not for a collection of true statements. Physics mark schemes want a named principle, then that principle applied to the specific situation in front of you, then the consequence that follows.
Retake students routinely write all three elements and still land in the bottom band, because they wrote them in the wrong order or left out the middle one. “Momentum is conserved” and “so the trolley slows down” are both correct and both worth very little without the sentence between them that does the applying. This is drillable and most resitters never drill it.
Practical and uncertainty questions
These are the quietest losses because they feel like laboratory content rather than exam content. Why repeating a reading reduces random error but does nothing for a systematic one. Which quantity to plot against which to get a straight line that tests the relationship you were given. How to combine percentage uncertainties. They are part of the 40%, and they appear on every paper.
Your Practical Endorsement Carries Forward
Physics has the same two-result structure as the other sciences. There is the grade, from the written papers, and the practical endorsement, reported separately as Pass or Not Classified.
The rule for resit candidates is the same one that applies in biology and chemistry. If you already hold a certificated Pass, you carry it forward under a separate entry code, sit the written papers only, and do not repeat the practical work. The Pass travels across exam boards as well, so switching specification does not cost you it. Two things follow that physics resitters specifically get wrong.
The first is administrative: confirm in writing, before any deposit changes hands, whether your Pass is being carried forward or whether the centre intends to deliver the endorsement again. The answer changes both the cost and the shape of your year.
The second is that banking the Pass does not remove the practicals from your exam. In physics it removes less than it does in the other two sciences, because uncertainty and error analysis are not a side topic here. They are part of the mathematical weighting, and they are examined in the written papers whether or not you ever touch an oscilloscope again.
Know What Is On the Data Sheet and What Is Not
Every board supplies a data and formulae booklet in the physics exam. Every board’s specification also lists the equations you are expected to recall, which are not in that booklet.
Resitters get this backwards with some regularity. They revise from the booklet, on the reasonable assumption that it represents the equations that matter, and arrive without the ones they were supposed to have memorised. Print your board’s booklet and your board’s list of required equations side by side in September and work out which column you are weak on. It takes an afternoon and it is the highest return afternoon of the autumn.
Why a Missed Physics Grade Closes a Route
In most subjects a missed grade costs you an offer. You take the insurance choice, or you go through Clearing, or you apply again a place down the league table. The subject you missed is rarely the point.
Physics does not work like that, because on the courses physics students are usually aiming at it is a named requirement rather than a preference. Cambridge’s engineering course (opens in a new tab) asks for A-levels in Mathematics and Physics, with Further Mathematics on top if your school offers it. That is a requirement, not a list of subjects they like to see. Most mechanical, civil, aeronautical and general engineering courses at selective universities are built the same way, as are physics, astrophysics and most natural sciences routes.
The consequence is a different kind of decision. Strength elsewhere does not substitute. Three A*s in maths, chemistry and economics do not open an engineering course if physics is the grade you missed, and no amount of personal statement addresses it. The route is shut until the grade moves.
There are edges worth knowing. Chemical engineering will often take chemistry in place of physics. Some electronic, software and engineering foundation routes accept alternatives or run their own bridging year. Check the specific courses you want rather than assuming either way, because the variation between departments is larger than most applicants expect.

There is no autumn resit series for A-level physics. The November series run by AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and WJEC covers GCSEs only, so a physics retake means sitting next summer.

Do I have to redo the physics practicals if I retake?
No, not if you already hold a certificated Pass in the practical endorsement. Resit candidates carry it forward under a separate entry code and sit the written papers only. You would repeat the practical work only if you were Not Classified and want a Pass, or if you never received a certificated result.
Is A-level physics really 40% maths?
At minimum, yes. The regulator’s subject-level conditions require at least 40% of the marks in A-level physics to assess mathematical skills, against 20% in chemistry and 10% in biology. It is the highest mathematical weighting of any of the three sciences, and it is why so many physics retakes are really calculation retakes.
Can I resit just the physics paper that went badly?

Should I switch exam board for a physics retake?
Usually not. Your endorsement Pass travels with you, so there is no administrative penalty, but you would spend the autumn learning a new content order, a new data booklet and a new mark scheme’s habits instead of fixing the calculation and explanation problems that cost the grade. Switch only for a specific reason you can articulate.
Can I still apply for engineering with a physics retake?
Yes, and applying with the grade already achieved is usually the stronger position. What varies is each department’s stance on resits, so check the courses you want individually. The firmer point is the subject requirement itself: if physics is named as required, no other subject substitutes for it, however well you did elsewhere.
How much can a physics retake realistically move the grade?
A full grade is a reasonable target for a student who understood the material and lost marks to arithmetic, unit prefixes and badly ordered explanations, because those are habits rather than knowledge gaps. A two grade jump normally means the content was not secure, which needs a taught year rather than self study.
How does physics compare with the other sciences on top grades?

Diagnose the Calculation, Not the Content
The instinct after a missed physics grade is to go back to the beginning of the specification, because that feels like the thorough thing to do. In a subject where two marks in five are mathematics, it is usually the wrong thorough thing.
Sit a paper, mark it yourself, and sort every lost mark into three piles: calculation, explanation, practical. Most retake students find one pile is much taller than the other two. That pile is your year.
